Comet Walks in dog Wheelchair

Comet plays in his dog wheelchair
Meet Comet! Comet, a beautiful golden retriever from Rhode Island, was one of the lucky pets that got a new wheelchair from Kathy Barton’s 4th graders in Oklahoma. Comet tested his new wheels at the RISPCA, where Marvin and Dr. Finocchio – who also contributed to the 4th graders 2008 fundraiser – looked on with delight as Comet raced around the room. The new wheels replaced an old, “recycled” set that Comet’s family had received from a friend. Comet’s rear legs were paralyzed from an auto accident two years ago, but between the love and devotion of his family and his rolling legs, this dog doesn’t seem to notice that he’s “handicapped.” Two local RI television newsmen were there to film Comet, and this happy story was then picked up by television news affiliates across the country!

Teachers Guide to Handicapped Pets

Teachers manual for handiacpped petsIt’s here! We are extremely excited to offer this free teaching manual to youth educators and leaders everywhere. Kathy Barton, 4th grade teacher from Oklahoma, developed this manual with the help of friends of HandicappedPets.com. This simple, accessible curriculum guide is adaptable to many ages in classroom or group settings.

In a time when violence and intolerance occurs all too often, this unique approach to helping children learn compassion through witnessing it through handicapped pets and then taking action themselves is invaluable. Please download it, share it, spread the word.

The last page of the manual is a resource listing of caretakers of handicapped pets who are willing to go into classrooms as part of this program. If you and your pet would be willing to make a classroom or youth group visit, please email: lisa @ handicappedpets.com to be included in the listing, which will be updated on a regular basis.

Lucy, a cute black dog with a bright blue tongue, was born in Puerto Rico. Hit by a car and left by the side of the road to die, she was rescued by the Second Chance Animal Rescue and, after almost giving up hope, by a woman in Peterborough, NH. In October 2008 she was named "HandicappedPets.com Official Mascot" and given a new Walkin' Wheels dog wheelchair. Watch the Movie
